If you’re planning a construction project in Lahore, one of the first questions that comes up is: which crush or aggregate grade do I actually need? With terms like A Grade, B Grade, Waterbound, Base, Subbase, and size labels like “2 Sooter” or “Half Down,” it’s easy to get confused — especially if you’re ordering material for the first time.
This guide breaks down what each type means and where it’s used, so you can order the right material the first time.
A Grade vs B Grade Crush
The grade refers to the overall quality and consistency of the crushed stone.
- A Grade crush is cleaner, more consistently sized, and generally stronger — used where structural integrity matters most, such as premium road base or foundation work.
- B Grade crush is a more economical option, still reliable for general filling, sub-base layers, and projects where the highest grading isn’t essential.
If your project has strict engineering specifications, A Grade is usually the safer choice. For general filling or budget-conscious projects, B Grade often does the job well.
Understanding the Layers: Subbase, Base, and Waterbound
Road and foundation construction typically uses crush in layers, each with a different role:
- Subbase — the bottom layer, providing initial structural support and drainage beneath the base.
- Base — sits above the subbase, offering a firmer platform for the final surface layer.
- Waterbound (Waterbound Macadam) — the top structural layer, compacted with water to lock the stones together for maximum stability, typically used just below the final road surface or flooring.
Ordering the correct layer matters — using a “Base” grade where “Waterbound” is specified (or vice versa) can affect the strength and lifespan of the structure.
Crush Sizes Explained: 2 Sooter, 3 Sooter, and Half Down
For concrete work specifically, crush size affects the mix strength and finish:
- Half Down (15-20mm) — larger aggregate, commonly used in general concrete work.
- 3 Sooter (10-15mm) — mid-size aggregate, used where a finer mix is needed.
- 2 Sooter (5-10mm) — the finest of the three, often used for concrete finishing or applications requiring a smoother result.
Most concrete mix designs specify an exact size range — if you’re unsure which one your project calls for, it’s worth confirming with your site engineer or contractor before ordering.
Stonedust and Boulder — Specialty Uses
Beyond structural crush, we also supply:
- Stonedust (Brown or Black) — a fine crushed material used for paver joint filling, flooring base, and decorative finishing.
- Boulder — large stones used for retaining walls, landscaping, and heavy foundation reinforcement.
Sourcing: Sargodha, Dina, and Margalla
Crush quality and character also vary by source location:
- Sargodha — our most extensive range, covering all the grades and sizes above.
- Dina — a reliable, widely-used crush source for general construction.
- Margalla Special — a premium-tier crush, generally chosen for projects requiring the highest quality standard.
